Canelo vs. Fielding Betting Odds

WBA super middleweight world champion Rocky Fielding makes the first defence of his title against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday 15 December.

It’s a huge challenge for Liverpool-born Fielding (27-1-0), with Canelo being one of the top names in the sport.

The Mexican is stepping up to super middleweight having unified the middleweight division in September this year, when he controversially secured a points’ decision victory over the previously undefeated Gennady Golovkin. Most observers believed that the Kazakh fighter edged the contest.

The pair had met previously in September 2017, with the fight ending in a split draw, with Dave Moretti scoring the fight 115–113 for Golovkin, Adalaide Byrd scoring it 118–110 for Álvarez, and Don Trella scoring it 114–114. On that occasion, it was almost universally agreed that Golovkin should have been declared the winner.

The fact remains that the only defeat Canelo has on his record was to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in September 2013. That defeat cost Canelo his WBC, WBA “regular” and The Ring light middleweight titles. There was also some controversy over that fight, with Mayweather winning the fight by majority decision, despite most pundits believing that the American was a clear winner on the night.

Rocky Fielding claimed the WBA super middleweight title by beating Germany’s Tyron Zeuge by TKO in the 5th round six months ago. Fielding has 15 KOs in his 27 professional wins to date, with his one loss coming against fellow Liverpudlian Callum Smith in November 2015. The highly-rated Smith beat Fielding by TKO in the 1st round to claim the vacant WBC Silver and British super middleweight titles.

Fielding bounced back from his loss to Smith in impressive fashion with some good wins, including victory over John Ryder by split decision for the British title in April 2017. He then went on to defend his title and regained the Commonwealth title with an impressive 1st round KO of the highly-rated Scotsman David Brophy.

Canelo vs. Fielding Betting Tips

Canelo has by far the greater experience when it comes to fighting at the very highest level and is recognized as an excellent counterpuncher and formidable body puncher. Those attributes could prove decisive factors should the fight go the distance or reach the latter rounds.

Fielding has said that he’s happy to be considered the rank outsider. “I am really switched on and it is a big step up, but having the fear factor with that step up and the challenge, you perform. I am happy I’ve now got this fear factor.”

The Mexican does look the likely winner, but odds of -1600 are not remotely attractive. A better value option could be back Canelo to secure the win between rounds 10 and 12 at +750 with bet365*.
