2017 NFL - Steelers vs. Texans Week 16 Odds and Betting Preview
December 23, 2017
This Monday the Pittsburgh Steelers will be doing their best to work their way into the top spot in the AFC standings and they’ll be this against the Houston Texans. The Texans aren’t a particularly potent threat for a team like Pittsburgh to deal with, but injury has spread the Steelers this enough to make of game of things. As play gets underway for these two, the Steelers will be 9.0 betting favourites on the spread. All of the spread, total, and money line odds that you see below are provided by Bet365. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a couple of things to worry about coming into this game, but overall they should be in control. They’ve won eight out of their last nine starts this season and on the year they are ranked 9th and 7th in offence and defence respectively. They are going up against a team that’s had trouble containing their opponents’ offence and Ben Roethlisberger should have no problem digging in for a few points against the kind of defence Houston has to offer. Where the Steelers get into trouble is in two areas. The first is in their momentum. After stringing together eight straight wins, they fell last week to the Patriots in a game that they should have quite easily won. They also have just a plethora of injuries to deal with at the moment as well. Ramon Foster, Joe Haden, and Antonio Brown are all probably out for Monday and those are just the few most notable players. Antonio Brown being out of the line up, in particular, will be a significant issue for the Steelers’ offence as he’s been responsible for more than 100 receiving yards in four out of his last five starts.
The Houston Texans don’t have the injury problems that the Steelers have right now, but they have plenty of issues of their own. Houston has lost their last four games in a row and most recently they dropped a game to the Jacksonville Jaguars while scoring only 7 points. That is a most troubling fact as the thing that has been most consistently letting the Texans down has been their defence. Their offence has deteriorated so badly in the last little while that they’ve averaged a mere 13 points per game over their last four starts. For a team that allows approximately 27 points per game to their opponents, that kind of gap is just simply untenable. Of course, it can’t all be bad news for the Texans and it most certainly is not. They’ve done incredibly well at home for a team with a record of just 4-10, having won 11 out of their last 16 games at home.
And as far as the betting trends are going right now, it appears that a lot of Canadian NFL bettors are liking the underdog on this one. Approximately 66% of the money line betting action is going to the home team Houston Texans at the moment. As far as how the experts see it, five out of the eight members of the CBS Sports pick and prediction panel believe that the Steelers will cover the 9.0 point spread.
