The Atlanta Falcons come into this game as underdogs, but there’s reason to think they have a chance to put together an upset. Not only have they won their last two starts in a row, but they’ve recently laid waste to the very team they’re facing this week and that’s no small task. They took down the Saints 20 to 17 in a game in which they held the New Orleans’ offence to fewer than 350 yards. Repeating that kind of defensive performance might be a bit too much to ask for a team like Atlanta, but fortunately their offence has been working a lot better as of late and that should give them a bit of a boost. They’ve averaged just 22 points per game this season, but they’ve scored 24 points or more in five of their last eight starts. As you’ll read in a minute, they don’t have a great road record against the Saints and that will drop their chances a bit, but at least with their improved offence they can give the upset a go.
As for the Saints, despite their recent loss to the Falcons, they’ve been putting up some impressive stats. They’ve won eight out of their last twelve starts, and if they manage to win their game this Sunday against the Falcons, they will have absolutely secured the NFC South title for the regular season. Where they gain their greatest advantage in this game is through their offensive capabilities and their home field advantage. The Saints are ranked third in the league in scoring and their twenty-seven points per game clears the Falcons’ numbers by a full five points. Even when they lost to the Falcons two weeks ago they managed to get a reasonable performance out of Drew Brees. He put up 275 yards in that game and rattled off two touchdowns. As for their home field advantage, it is not something to be taken lightly. The Saints have won 8 out of their last 11 home games against the Falcons straight up and 5 out of their last 7 against them on any field. Anything can happen this late in the season, but history does bode particularly well for the betting favourites.
As far as the Canadian betting public is concerned, however, the Saints are not a team to be backed. Right now approximately 80% of the betting action is on the Falcons and the betting experts are not that far behind the punters. Nearly half of the experts at CBS Sports think the underdogs can win with a 5.5 point head start.
