Saints vs. Panthers Match Preview & Betting Odds 2018/19
December 16, 2018
A few weeks ago, things were looking good for the Panthers. But then they lost five in a row and have gone from being a contender to having their playoff hopes hanging on by a thread. The first loss was an embarrassing one to the Steelers, but the rest were all by a touchdown or less.
In three of those games, they were tied or in the lead at some point in the fourth quarter. Cam Newton threw four interceptions in the other game.
Newton has been battling a shoulder injury in recent weeks. It seems to have gotten bad enough that the team didn’t try to throw downfield much last week against the Browns. Instead, most of his passes were safe short to intermediate routes.
As for the Saints, they got off to a slow start last week against the Buccaneers but were able to get it together late and pull out the win. Chances are the loss to the Dallas Cowboys was still stinging. The possibility of losing to the Bucs needed to become real to jolt them back to reality.
Carolina’s seventh-ranked run defence may make it a little harder to get Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram on track. But after two lackluster weeks in a row, Drew Brees will probably enjoy an opportunity to shine.
So—who’s going to win?
Carolina’s best chance against the Saints would be in the passing game. But with Newton banged up it is hard to imagine the Panther’s pass game doing as well as it needs to. Look for the dominant Saints to return and win this one with ease (straight up and against the spread).
As for the over/under—go with the under.
