Proline VS Online Sportsbooks

Proline VS Online Sportsbooks

Proline vs Online Sportsbook Odds Value

For many Canadian bettors, there is a belief that the only way to legally bet on sports in the country is to use Proline. The reality is that there are plenty of legal online sportsbook web sites available to Canadians that will invariably provide much better value for money and a far wider selection of betting options than is the case with Proline.

A huge drawback with Proline, is that straight bets are not an option. Bettors are required to select between 3 and 6 outcomes for a bet slip to be eligible.

The choice is obvious…

The reality is that online sportsbooks will invariably have far more attractive odds than Proline, which can often enable you to win around double what you would if betting on Proline. If you then factor in the provincial taxes on Proline’s wagers and the fact that you’ll need to print out your ticket and bring it to an OLG retailer, the appeal of using an online sportsbook in preference to Proline becomes increasingly obvious.

In addition to the betting odds, online sportsbooks provide a far wider range of betting options, including… Straight Bets, Parlays, Props and Teasers, plus there is the ability to combine bets across Money Lines, Point Spreads and Totals and buy points.

There really is no argument when it comes to choosing between betting options and lines offered with Proline and online sportsbooks. No pro bettor would even consider using Proline.

What is Proline?

Proline betting has been available at retail kiosks across Canada since 1992-93, with it being accessible online since 2000. There are only a limited number of betting options with Proline and in order to fill out a slip you must choose between 3 and 6 outcomes. Pro-Picks and Point Spreads differ slightly, but still follow the same model.

The provincial sports lotteries have a number of confusing tie rules when it comes to grading your wagers, which all go to stack the odds against you even more. There is even more confusion caused by the fact that the rules vary by province as well. With an online sportsbook, you get far more options when it comes to betting markets, but there are far more attractive odds on offer too and much fewer limitations on your bets.

There are 5 different options for who will win a game that is listed in Proline and these need to be understood for each sport…

Proline NHL

Any regular-season NHL game that is tied after regulation time and overtime is declared a tie (shootouts do not count) with NHL Proline rules. During the NHL playoffs, any games that go to overtime are declared a tie (overtime does not count!). If betting on the NHL, there is a far better variety of markets and much more competitive betting lines with an online sportsbook than you would get using NHL Proline odds.

In NHL, the five Proline options are as follows:

  • V+ – Away team wins by 2 or more goals.
  • V – Away team wins by 1 or more goals.
  • T – Game is decided in a shootout.
  • H – Away team wins by 1 or more goals.
  • H+ – Home team wins by 2 or more goals.

Proline MLB

In MLB Proline rules, any game that ends with a one-run differential will be declared a tie. Any extra innings will count towards the final score, so if you pick a tie in a game that goes to extra innings and then one team wins by two or more, your wager will be a loser. Once again, the harsh reality is that Proline MLB odds bear no comparison to those available with an online sportsbook.

In MLB, the five Proline options are as follows:

  • V+ – Away team wins by 2 or more runs.
  • V – Away team wins by 1 or more runs.
  • T – Game is decided by 1 run.
  • H – Away team wins by 1 or more runs.
  • H+ – Home team wins by 2 or more runs.

Proline NFL

In NFL Proline Rules, any game that is decided by three points or less is officially declared a tie. Overtime also counts towards the final score, so if you pick a tie in a game that goes to overtime and then one team wins by a touchdown, your wager is declared a losing one. Proline NFL odds are far less attractive than using online sportsbooks for wagers on the NFL.

In NFL, the five Proline options are as follows:

  • V+ – Away team wins by 8 or more points.
  • V – Away team wins by 4 or more points.
  • T – Game is decided by 3 or fewer points.
  • H – Away team wins by 4 or more points
  • H+ – Home team wins by 8 or more points.

Proline NBA

With NBA Proline rules, any basketball game that is decided by five points or less will be declared as a tie. Overtime counts towards the final score, so if you pick the tie in a game that goes to overtime and then one team wins by six or more, you will lose. If looking for value, then an online sportsbook is the way to go as opposed to NBA Proline odds.

In NBA, the five Proline options are as follows:

  • V+ – Away team wins by 11 or more points.
  • V – Away team wins by 6 or more points.
  • T – Game is decided by 5 or fewer points.
  • H – Away team wins by 6 or more points.
  • H+ – Home team wins by 11 or more points.

Proline CFL

In CFL Proline Rules, any Canadian Football League game that is decided by three points or less is declared a tie. Overtime does count towards the final score, so if you pick a tie in a game that goes to overtime and then one team wins by a touchdown, your bet loses. With unattractive CFL Proline odds, this really isn’t the best way to bet on the CFL.

In CFL, the five Proline options are as follows:

  • V+ – Away team wins by 8 or more points.
  • V – Away team wins by 4 or more points.
  • T – Game is decided by 3 or fewer points.
  • H – Away team wins by 4 or more points
  • H+ – Home team wins by 8 or more points.
