Deontay “Brown Bomber” Wilder (40-0-1) makes a mandatory defence of his WBC heavyweight title against Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale (20-1-0) at the Barclays Center in New York on 18 May.

It will be a ninth defence of his title for Wilder, who became world champion when he defeated Bermane Stiverne by Unanimous Decision back in January 2015.

This will be Wilder’s first fight since he suffered the first blemish on his record in the controversial Split Decision draw against the ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury, when many observers believed that, despite twice putting Fury on the canvas, he’d been largely outboxed and outscored.

It’s worth noting that although Wilder is renowned for his KO record (winning 39 of his 40 fights inside the distance), five of his last seven stoppage victories have come in the 8th round or later.

Recommended Odds

The California-born Breazeale has lost just one of his 21 fights, which was to the IBF, WBO and WBA champion Anthony Joshua by a Technical Knockout in June 2016. Like Wilder, Breazeale can punch, having had 18 KOs in his 20 wins to date.  Since being beaten by Joshua, he has beaten Izu Ugonoh (by KO in 5th round), Éric Molina (retired in 8th round) and Carlos Negrón (by KO in 9th round).

There’s plenty riding on this fight, with the victor potentially in line for an undisputed title bout with the winner of Anthony Joshua’s fight against the American Jarrell Miller in New York on 1 June.

Deontay Wilder vs Dominic Breazeale Betting Odds & Prediction

Predictions for this fight have to take into account that neither boxer tends to go the full distance. Wilder has an edge in terms of speed and Breazeale is widely regarded as being somewhat predictable in his approach.

Wilder has to be the betting tip to win this fight, although odds of -600 with bet365 don’t appeal. The betting line on Breazeale is +500 at 888Sport. A better alternative is to back Wilder in the ‘Round Group’ betting at odds of +600 with bet365 in rounds 10-12.
