Great Britain vs Canada Prediction & Betting Odds
May 12, 2019
Great Britain and Canada meet at the Steel Arena in Kosice on Sunday evening (local time) in the IIHF World Championship 2019 for what will be the second group game for both teams
Both teams will be looking to rally from defeats in their opening games, although even Great Britain’s most passionate fans will know that their team has little realistic chance against one of the tournament big favourites.
Great Britain came into the tournament as rank outsiders, with this being their first appearance in the top division of the World Championship in 25 years. Although there were some surprise results on the opening day at this year’s tournament, it would be a monumental shock were Great Britain to beat Canada. Just keeping the score respectable would be considered something of an achievement.
Predictably enough, Great Britain started the IIHF World Championship 2019 with a 3-1 loss to Germany on Saturday afternoon. That was a decent effort from the supposed whipping boys of the tournament, particularly given that the Germans could call upon Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, a player who finished as second top scorer in the NHL regular season in the campaign just a few weeks ago.
In fact Great Britain were even tied at 1-1 early in the third period after a goal from the Canadian-born Mike Hammond.
Canada lost forward John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs to injury on the eve of the tournament, which was a significant blow. They then opened the finals with a 3-1 loss to Finland on the opening day, with 18 year-old Kaapo Kakko (a guaranteed high pick in the NHL draft next month) scoring twice for the Finns.
Canada did tie the game at 1-1 through Jonathan Marchessault in the first period but Finland were worthy winners, as they outshot Canada 27-21.
