Host nation Slovakia meet Canada on Monday evening (local time) at the Steel Arena in Kosice, in the third group game for both these teams in the IIHF World Championship 2019.

To date Slovakia and Canada have each recorded a win and a loss apiece in the tournament, with Finland getting the better of both of these teams, having first beaten Canada 3-1, then Slovakia 4-2.  Finland’s 18 year-old Kaapo Kakko scored twice against the Canadians and then scored a hat-trick against Slovakia.

The Slovaks actually started the tournament with a very impressive 4-1 win over the much-fancied USA, with goals from Matus Sukel, Erik Cernak, Tomas Tatar (of the Montreal Canadiens) and Michal Kristof.

In the game against Finland, Cernak gave Slovakia the lead and Martin Marincin later leveled the game at 2-2 late in the second period, before star of the tournament to date Kakko put Finland in control of the game in the third period.

It was no great surprise that Canada rallied from their defeat to Finland (Canada’s goal in that game coming from Jonathan Marchessault) by beating Great Britain 8-0 in their second game, with two goals each from Anthony Mantha (who also registered three assists) and Kyle Turris (one assist) and a goal apiece from Mathieu Joseph, Dylan Strome, Dante Fabbro and Sean Couturier.

It was a predictably comfortable win over a Great Britain team that simply doesn’t come up against teams of Canada’s quality on a regular basis and hasn’t featured in the top division of the World Championship since 1994.  The Canadians will know that the Slovaks present a far tougher challenge.

Slovakia vs Canada Betting Odds & Prediction

With regards to predictions, Slovakia do have a couple of major factors in their advantage with the benefit of home-ice and the majority of support and of having had a day’s extra rest since their last game. The good news for Canada is that the rout of Great Britain wouldn’t have been the most exerting.

The Money Line has Slovakia at +400 with bet365, with Canada at -550 with 888Sport. Those betting lines don’t look terribly attractive on Canada in a game that could be close, so the tip is to back Slovakia on the Puck Line +1.5 at odds of +140 with bet365.
