Canada vs USA Prediction & Betting Odds- IIHF 2019 Preview
May 20, 2019
Team Canada face the USA on Tuesday evening (local time) at the Steel Arena in Kosice, Slovakia in the seventh and last group game for both these teams in the 2019 IIHF World Championship.
The USA have already qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament and barring an unlikely loss to Denmark in their penultimate group game, Canada will also be assured of their place in the quarter-finals when these two teams face each other on Tuesday night.
What is at stake here is that the winners of this game will theoretically get an easier draw in the last eight, which could mean the difference between playing perhaps two-time defending champions Sweden or Switzerland.
The advantage in the group standings going into this game should, if as widely expected Canada beat the Danes, be with the Canadians by virtue of having won five and lost one of their six group games at that point. That would give them a one-point advantage over the USA who needed OT to beat Finland.
Both teams started the group stage with a defeat, Canada going down 3-1 to Finland and the USA on the end of a 4-1 loss to host nation Slovakia.
Canada and the USA have been the two top teams at the IIHF World Championship 2019 in terms of Power Play % efficiency, with Canada at 60% and the USA at 50%. On the Penalty Killing stats, the US are currently 5th at this year’s championship with 83.33%, while Canada are joint 10th at 75:00%.
Canada vs USA Betting Odds & Predictions
The teams met twice last year at the IIHF World Championship 2018 in Denmark. In the group stages, the USA won 5-4 in game that went to a shootout. They would later meet again in the 3rd Place play-off, with the USA running out 4-1 winners that time (although this result is almost certainly not that very relevant given that 3rd Place play-off games are not particularly competitive in any sport).
With regards to IIHF betting predictions for this game, this could be unquestionably be both competitive and close given what’s potentially at stake for both teams. Regulation Time betting at Sports Interaction has Canada as the narrow favourites at -123, with the draw at +363 and the line on the USA is set at +191.
This game could easily go to Overtime, so the Draw is the pick in Regulation Time here.
