Patriots vs. Chiefs Match Preview and Betting Odds 2018/19
January 18, 2019
Prior to the divisional round of the playoffs, there was a good reason why many were doubting whether the Patriots had what it takes to make a run at the Super Bowl. After losing two of four games in December, they looked far from ready to make a run.
But then they faced the Los Angeles Chargers last week and proved the world wrong.
Not only was the offence ready (35 first-half points) but the defence shut down a very potent Chargers offence (seven first-half points before the Patriots let off the gas in the second half).
Shutting down the Chiefs offence will not be nearly as easy, of course. They were unable to do so back in Week Six when Patrick Mahomes threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns. But the Patriots also had two clutch interceptions that made a huge difference.
One led to a Patriots touchdown, and the other took a scoring opportunity away from the Chiefs (endzone).
Brady may also find it harder to score against the Chiefs because they are very good at doing what he hates—applying pressure. They were first in the NFL in sacks during the regular season. While they only got to Andrew Luck three times last week, Luck was constantly under pressure and being forced to throw when he didn’t want to.
But can the Chiefs pass rush step it up a notch against the Patriots and help bring home the win?
The pass rush will help, but the more significant factor will be the Patriots inability to slow down the Chiefs offence.
