Russia recorded an eighth straight victory to maintain their 100% record at this year’s IIHF World Championship with a 4-3 win over the USA in Thursday afternoon’s quarter-final in Bratislava. A goal from Nikita Gusev on 1:07 gave Russia an early lead and they were always ahead from that point. The other goals came via Mikhail Sergachev, Kirill Kaprizov and Mikhail Grigorenko.
There are several Russian hockey players making a big impression at these championships, with Yevgeni Dadonov one of six players on seven goals at the finals, Nikita Kucherov on 16 points (six goals and 10 assists) and Andrei Vasilevski with a Goals Against Average (GAA) of just 1.67.
Finland ended the reign of two-time defending champions Sweden in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 OT win at the Steel Arena in Kosice on Thursday evening. (see video below)

Finland took the lead through Niko Mikkola after just 1:00 of the first period, but the Swedes rallied to go 3-1 ahead early in the second period. Finland recovered with goals from Petteri Lindbohm and Jani Hakanpaa, but then Sweden retook the lead late in the second period.
Finland leveled the scores through Marko Anttila with 1:29 of regulation time remaining to tie the score at 4-4 and force OT, and Sakari Manninen won it for Finland 1:37 into overtime.
