UFC on ESPN 12: Poirier vs. Hooker Betting Pick

We’ve finally reached the last UFC event before it makes its way to Yas Island for the long-awaited Fight Island. And man, what a main event Dana White set up for before sending us to Abu Dhabi.
Poirier vs. Hook

Former interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier (25-6, 1 NC) takes on the number five ranked Dan Hooker (20-8) in the main event. Sometimes there are fights that are tantalizing at first glance, but then the fight happens, and they completely fail to live up to expectation (Adesanya v Romero). However, this main event is guaranteed to entertain any MMA fan.

This will be Poirier’s first fight since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov back in September because he’s been recovering from hip surgery. Poirier’s insane run heading into the Khabib fight means defeating Hooker can place him right back into title contention and could potentially fight the winner of Khabib and Justin Gaethje, with the latter was bested by Poirier back in April 2018.

Should Gaethje claim lightweight gold, Poirier said he’ll be open for a rematch with “The Highlight”.

“I’m always open to it,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “It was ‘Fight of the Year,’ I thought, and I’m sure it would be again. I love watching him fight and like I always say, anybody, I’m a fan of watching fights, I would love to fight them because I know we’ll put some craziness on in there.”

But before that, he must get through the New Zealander Dan Hooker who’s been on a hot streak himself.

The Hangman has won seven of his last eight fights, including a first-round knockout win over Gilbert Burns, who faces welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, at UFC 251. Hooker’s on a three-fight win streak, most recently earning a split decision win over Paul Felder in February.

Hooker knows this is the biggest fight of his career yet and he has plans on what to do should he beat Poirier.

“If I beat Dustin Poirier there’s only three fights in my future. That’s either fight for the title, fight Tony Ferguson, or fight Conor McGregor.

“So, I feel like I’m in a position to get called out and get called out by either Tony Ferguson or Conor McGregor. I’ve been calling these guys out for years, and I feel like, with this fight, it puts me in a position where I’m not a guy that’s running around chasing all of these people, I feel like they can come to me,” said Hooker during an interview with Submission TV.

H2 UFC on ESPN 12 Odds and Betting Pick

888 Sportsbooks has Dustin Poirier favorite with odds of -235 to come out on top, compared to Hooker’s odds of +185 to win the fight. Poirier is also favored to win by knockout, submission or DQ with odds of -121. Hooker’s odds of the same method of winning open at +275.

Three of Poirier’s last four wins have come by TKO or submission while three of Hooker’s last five wins have all come by first-round KO’s.

This fight is guaranteed fireworks and the winner and loser of this match-up will continue to have tough fights since they reside in the most stacked division in the UFC, but I have Poirier to get back on track with a KO win in the third round.
