Khabib vs McGregor UFC 229 Odds and Betting Preview
August 21, 2018
The UFC branded Conor McGregor’s actions as disgusting when he threw a trolley through a bus window in an attempt to hurt Khabib Nurmagomedov. (He didn’t succeed, although he did manage to hurt fighters who had nothing to do with their beef.) The UFC condemned it and then went and used it in a promo for a fight between the pair.
We’d like to say that you couldn’t make it up but many called it at the time. Some even suggest that the whole fracas was an act to build up the hype for the event. Not that it needed it.
UFC fans have been dying for this fight for ages. It involves the biggest star in the company fighting the fastest-rising star in the sport. Khabib will put his lightweight title on the line for a match that he’s utterly confident he will win. On the longest-unbeaten streak in MMA history, there is no reason for him to fear a man who hasn’t fought in an octagon in two years. And for all of the grandeur that accompanies McGregor, that is what he is. A man who has taken time off to enjoy his wealth and watch his family grow.
A man who has taken time off to successfully pursue money-making ventures with Floyd Mayweather. Has it been enough time for there to be a reassessment of McGregor? Maybe. There’s no doubt that he’s one of the best fighters in MMA yet there’s little confidence about him winning against Khabib.
Not after his last few fights proved how easily gassed he is. Not after he produced so much evidence that he’s weak on the ground. Weak where Khabib is frighteningly strong, leagues above the next best. Is this simply another payday for McGregor? This is his chance to prove all of his doubters wrong. To prove that he loves fighting – as well as money.
